Development, Displacement and Resettlement

CEPA’s 48th Open Forum on “Development, Displacement and Resettlement” will be held on Thursday 21st February 2013 at 4.30 pm at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, 100, Independence Avenue, Colombo 7.

This Open Forum discussion seeks to examine the National Involuntary Resettlement Policy (NIRP) in greater detail and to compare it with the existing laws applicable to land acquisition. In the context of the numerous development initiatives and private ventures that have been launched in the recent past, the Open Forum hopes to create greater awareness of the NIRP and share knowledge and experiences in implementing the policy in an effort to enable more inclusive development.

This Open Forum will feature three presentations by:
Gehan GunatillekeIndependent Law Practice Professional on Legal and Policy Framework: An overview of National Involuntary Resettlement Plan (NIRP),
Nayana GodamuneSenior Researcher at CEPA on the Displacement in Southern Expressway: A case study on use of NIRP in Southern Expressway, and
Mohamad Munas, Researcher at CEPA on Displacement in Sampur: A Case study on Land Acquisition, Livelihoods and Food Security.

The Open Forum will be chaired by Cyrene Siriwardena, Policy and Advocacy Manager, Oxfam Australia.
